It’s happened at some point where an extension lead is hanging out a window or through a ranch slider to provide power to something outside… the extra fridge for Christmas or the water blasting task on the deck. Whatever it may be, having an outdoor power point makes it simple to have electricity outside. Most new houses will already have them installed, but existing houses often need to be retrofitted.
An outdoor power-point must have a protection device on it. Outside, there’s more water, so the protection is to stop people from getting a shock. It can look a lot like the old shaver points that were in bathrooms. It’s an IP-rated power point that stops water and dust from getting in.
For example, in an IP67 rating, IP stands for ‘ingress protection.’ The first number represents a scale of 0-6, with 6 being total protection against dust. The second number represents a scale of 0-8, with 7 being protected against short periods of immersion in water, between 15cm and 1m for up to 30 minutes.
Because outdoor power points are exposed to moisture and potential contact with water, it is essential they have an RCD (Residual Current Device). An RCD constantly monitors the flow of electrical current and swiftly disconnects the power supply if it detects a leakage or imbalance, such as through a fault or accidental contact with water. This rapid response helps prevent electric shocks and reduces the risk of electrical fires, ensuring a safer outdoor electrical infrastructure.
The Christmas Fridge
When it’s that time of year, and you’re having guests over for Christmas, the extra fridge is always handy for all the delicious plates of food and BYO beverages. But there are many more reasons for having an outdoor power point; the possibilities are endless.
- The water blaster, so the water doesn’t drip back inside through the power cord.
- The BBQ rotisserie is often electric and needs a power source.
- Having a fountain in the garden can create a relaxing atmosphere.
- Plugging in some outdoor speakers so that music plays outside.
- Christmas lights – add some festive feeling to your deck.
- An outdoor television – music videos during the BBQ or watching a movie whilst sitting in the spa.
The Spa Pool
If you’re considering getting a spa pool for Christmas, getting a licensed electrician for the electrical requirements is important. Because spas come in various sizes, the power requirements also vary. But while adding a power point for the spa, consider adding a timer. Having specific times of day when the heating is on minimises your energy consumption and reduces operating costs.
Outdoor Heating
Outdoor heating extends the use of your outdoor living spaces during cooler seasons, but even in Summer, it can get a bit cooler towards the end of the night. Heating makes the spaces more comfortable and enjoyable throughout the year. There are various types of outdoor heating options, including fire pits, patio heaters, outdoor fireplaces, and heated seating. It’s a matter of choosing the right one for your living style.
We can install a power point so you can plug in an outdoor heater – and having the plug in the right place will help prevent people from tripping over the cord – or choose the superior hardwired version, which will enable you to install the heater in the right place for maximum enjoyment.

Outdoor Lighting
Accent lighting can showcase trees, plants, sculptures, and other landscaping features. You can match colours to different festivities such as Christmas and Halloween. There’s also a security functionality that outdoor lighting plays.
- Installing lighting around the perimeter of your property can act as a deterrent to unwanted visitors.
- Illuminating pathways and stairs helps to prevent trips and falls.
- Outdoor lighting extends the use of your outdoor areas into the evening.
Outdoor Kitchens
Outdoor kitchens have gained popularity for several reasons, but mostly because they enhance the overall outdoor living experience. It creates a more inclusive space by cooking and preparing meals while socialising with guests. You can integrate new cooking methods with grills, smokers, and pizza ovens; by cooking outdoors, your indoor spaces will be cooler. Well-designed outdoor kitchens can enhance the overall value of a property, too.
All these options require carefully thought-out planning of electrical needs. So whether you need the one socket or a larger project taken care of, French Electrical provides the best quality from conception to realisation. Get in touch with us to start the conversation.
